How many calories should I eat a day?
Noticed somewhat of a pattern that when I restrict my cals, I either gain weight or don't lose any, and when I eat what I want which is lots of cals
I tend to lose some weight. I'm 5'4" currently 129lbs, wish to get to 118 (pre preg weight). I have previously been doing a goal of 1400-1500 cals, and some have told me that's a good goal, and others have said to bump it to 2000. Maybe it increases my metabolism and I lose weight more easily. I exercise 5 days a week for about an hour a day, lots of cardio and starting some crossfit stuff tomorrow. I always thought you just simply reduce cals, and work out, and you lose weight. So should I stick with 2000 or so, or less? What did you do to lose weight?
Crossfit is VERY good stuff...you may actually not lose weight but may notice body composition changes (i.e. a bit more muscle). Your weight is fine as is, but if you are exercising on a regular basis I think that 1500 is a good number for you - your needs are somewhere around 1700-1900 calories as is.
As far as not seeing results, I would hesitate to cut your calories aggressively because you are pretty active. I would suggest instead upping the intensity of the exercise and keeping your calorie intake the same. Doing something new, like crossfit, will help in that arena. You could also increase the speed of cardio, or length of exercise to burn more calories. If you want to reduce intake, I'd consider a very subtle shift, like replacing a serving of starch with a serving of non-starchy vegetable per day. I don't think cutting calories very much in very active people is such a good idea.
